Daniel's Diary
Childhood Honesty
Submitted by Denise on Sat, 05/08/2010 - 12:15pm.
Today Daniel made a statement to a stranger that caught me off guard. Daniel is not one to ever make comments so I have to assume that this was just an occasion he felt needed addressing. Daniel and I stopped into a very small convenience store and when the clerk stepped out from behind the register, she was of a very large stature. Daniel immediately pointed to the lady, looked her right in the face and said "You Are BIG". The lady was very gracious and replied "You are the first person today, that did not tell me I was short". I figured that her response was acceptable and I expected to move on. Daniel was not swayed by the clerks comment and almost as if he had not heard her speak, he reiterated "You Are BIG", while still pointing toward her face. I was in shock, at this point I politely told Daniel to stop saying that, that he was not being nice. It is just not like Daniel to do this. I could not scold him because he was not wrong, but we obviously need to work on when to discuss thoughts of others.
I don't want to grow up!

Tonight at bath time Daniel suddenly burst into a melt down, crying out "I don't want to grow up". This was so sudden that I was not sure for a minute was happening. Daniel was so suddenly distraught that I was bewildered. It took a while for him to settle down and it was not until he was cuddled in my arms that I figured out what his process was. Some how at that moment Daniel had put together a few pieces of information. Daniel thought that if he were to "grow up" that he would not live with mommy and daddy any more. Apparently this thought terrified him and was the cause for his sudden meltdown. Holding Daniel in my arms I assured him that he could always live with mommy and daddy, that growing up would not change that. I reminded him how much he enjoys his birthday and having a birthday meant you were growing up. He seemed to be okay with that and his fear passed. Poor guy, I felt so bad for him, but I was glad we were able to talk it out.
Sarcasm?

Today Daniel showed a side of himself that proved just how much he is like daddy. We were leaving the grocery store and as we crossed from the store into the parking lot, Daniel noticed a word written on the pavement. Daniel suddenly shouted out the word "Stop" and proceeded to stand there. When I called for Daniel to come with me, he announced to me that the word "Stop" in on the ground. I had to pause and smile as he was correct. Next I acknowledged his discovery and explained that the word was there for the cars to "Stop" not for people walking to "Stop" there. Is this sarcasm or just being literal? I don't know, but it very much reminded me of something his father would do. :)
Cute Little Bumble Bee

This afternoon as Daniel and I were waiting for Laci's bus to arrive, Daniel gave me quite a scare. Daniel is very observant these days, especially when it comes to bugs of any sort. Daniel was bending down as if to pet something when he said "AWWWW Look at the Cute Little Bumble BEE." Mommy's pulse began to race as I immediately said, "Don't Touch the 'Cute Little Bumble Bee' or he will Sting you and that will be a BIG Boo Boo." He stopped in his tracks and it was a baby Bumble Bee, but not so cute anymore.
Our Son and our Gray Hair!
Submitted by Denise on Fri, 06/11/2010 - 9:37am.
This morning Daniel caused mommy's heart to race and more gray hair to grow in. We were in a local chain store and Daniel was being a very good helper. We were on our way to the check out when Daniel noticed soda. He asked "can we get some soda for daddy?" So of course, I stopped to pick up a 24 pack of soda to put into the cart. As my back turned to put the heavy square of soda into the cart, Daniel apparently decided he would help too. I turned back around to Daniel just in time to see him crash to the floor and a 24 pack of soda slam into to the side of his head. I was frozen a few seconds before rushing to him and saying "Oh Daniel". Obviously he was in pain and probably in a bit of shock as well. I could not believe that he could lift that heavy 24 pack of soda, more less move it from the stack that was taller than he was. Daniel immediately grew a goose egg on his head and clung to mommy. Mommy clung right back on him and did my best to comfort him. He was given a bag of ice and a lollipop, but none of those things seemed to ease his pain.
I know what we are going ......

Lately, Daniel's favorite TV show is Phineas & Ferb. On this show a common phrase is "Ferb, I know what we are going to do today." So seeing as Daniel loves to watch this show I should not have been surprised by his commentary this morning. As we were walking through the entrance at Kennywood this morning, Daniel says to me "Mom, I know what we are going to do today." I had to laugh as him sharing this phrase caught me off guard. My little comedian.
1st Sting
Submitted by Denise on Fri, 07/09/2010 - 10:43am.
This morning we met some friends at the park and Daniel was having fun playing. Suddenly I heard him start crying and shouting. I went to see what had happened and Daniel said in tears "I hurt myself". I asked him how he hurt himself and he showed me his leg. It was obvious at that point what had happened. Daniel had been stung, by what, I am still not sure. There were bees flying around the playground, but I did not personally see the one that got Daniel. He was such a trooper and he only cried a little. We put some ice on it for a few minutes and he was fine after that. Mommy kept an eye on Daniel and his sting, just in case anything changed. We do have bee allergies in the family so with this being the first sting, I was not sure what to expect. After seeing the doctor, we were advised to be prepared for more swelling and to be more cautious of sting #2. Apparently some kids with bee allergies don't have any reaction until sting #2. So for now it is Benadryl and Hydrocortisone, I feel so bad for my little man.
Sound the ALARM
Submitted by Denise on Wed, 07/14/2010 - 11:00am.
This morning at the library Daniel got everyone's attention. I am not sure of the reason but at the library they have the "Emergency Exit" door in the children's section. Daniel has attempted to go out this door before and I have explained to him that it is not a door we use and that a loud noise will go off he ever opens it. So while at the library this morning, Daniel decided to opened the "Emergency Door" which caused the alarm to sound. Daniel immediately ran to me in a panic with his hands over his ears. I hugged Daniel, told him that he was alright and I escorted him to the library front desk so that he could apologize for opening the door. Daniel was so distraught by this whole ordeal that I don't think he will EVER do this again. The library staff was very understanding and were more concerned about Daniel's panic attack over setting off the alarm. I consoled Daniel and after a few minutes he did settle down, he just kept saying "I don't want to touch that door anymore".
Odd Headache
Submitted by Denise on Thu, 08/05/2010 - 7:36pm.
This evening it was obvious that Daniel was not feeling well. He was able to tell us that his head was hurting but he was so pitiful. After some medicine and watching TV quietly he seemed to be feeling better. Daniel decided on his own to go up to his room, so after a few minutes mommy went to check on him. I found him in his room with the light on, hiding under his quilt on his bed. My poor baby was not feeling better and in fact was trying to hide his eyes from the light. When I uncovered him he was starting to sweat but did not want the quilt from around his head. He squinted and wanted his eyes shielded. I explained that it was not safe for him to cover his head with the blanket but assured Daniel that I would help him with his headache. As Daniel prepared himself for bed, mommy prepared his room. I believe that part of his headache was due to his constant sniffling. I am not sure if he has a new habit or perhaps a new allergy but the sniffling is continual. Daniel was able to blow his nose (finally) which helped with the sniffling, we turned the light off, got him comfy, put an ice pack on his head and got a little more medicine.
